How Audiobook Pricing Works

How Audiobook Narration Pricing Works

Many authors are surprised to learn that audiobook narration is typically priced by Finished Hour (PFH), not by the number of hours spent recording.

What Is a Finished Hour?

A Finished Hour is one hour of completed audiobook audio that listeners hear.

For example:

  • 9,000 words = approximately 1 Finished Hour
  • 45,000 words = approximately 5 Finished Hours
  • 90,000 words = approximately 10 Finished Hours

The exact length varies depending on pacing, dialogue, and the style of the book.

Why Not Charge by Recording Time?

Creating a professional audiobook involves much more than simply reading the manuscript.

The production process includes:

  • Narration and recording
  • Retakes and corrections
  • Editing
  • Audio cleanup
  • Quality control
  • Mastering to industry standards

A single Finished Hour of audiobook audio often requires 4 to 6 hours of production work.

Estimating Your Audiobook Length

A simple way to estimate audiobook duration is:

Word Count ÷ 9,000 = Approximate Finished Hours

Examples:

  • 18,000 words ≈ 2 hours
  • 45,000 words ≈ 5 hours
  • 72,000 words ≈ 8 hours
  • 90,000 words ≈ 10 hours
